Pale Pink Roses
The Meaning of Pale Pink Roses – Pale Pink Roses, the Universal Symbol of Grace & Joy
You ask any woman who receives a bouquet of pink roses and she will tell you that she knows she is both loved and appreciated. Pink roses have long represented love, affection and gratitude to someone special.
Of all the rose colors, pink roses have the longest history with mankind, since they are believed to be one of the oldest existing species of roses. Archaeologists have found pictographs of pink roses on several pieces of primitive artwork.
Plus the vast majority of today’s wild roses are pink roses. Wild roses have not been cultivated and can range in color from the palest pink to the deepest dark pink. Pink roses are thought to be one the first rose bushes to evolve.
But according to an Early Christian legend, pink roses came into being when they “blushed” with shame as God banished Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden.
Pale Pink Roses from China
However the pale pink rose got its color either from shame or evolution, the first modern pink roses to enter Europe arrived from China. Asian gardeners were some the first to cultivate and grow roses. In the 1700’s several Chinese hybrids including one called “old blush” and another called “bourbon pink” were imported into Europe.
The bourbon pink was discovered on the Island of Renoir (then a part of the French territories) in the late 1700s by a local botanist. He noticed that on Renoir the native people were planting a single row of wild rose hedges to separate their property lines and act as fences. It was the cuttings of this pale pink wild rose that later on became the grandmother what is known as the bourbon pink.
These Chinese hybrids became very popular in Europe. While they had ill-formed buds with long spindly stalks and very wicked, hooked barbs, they bloomed multiple times during the season verses the native roses which only bloomed once. They quickly became a mainstay in gardens across the Northern Hemisphere.
This rapid hybridization in home gardens and rose collections created a more uniform and beautiful pink rose bloom. It also reduced some of the barbs and created a more varied color range.
