The Meaning of Lilac Roses – A Sign of Enchantment

Lilac roses are the modern symbol of enchantment or love at first sight. Considered, until recently, one of the rarest of the naturally occurring roses, purple roses or lilac roses have shades that go from a very light almost translucent lavender to purples that have the darkest of midnight tones. This article will explore some of the meanings of lilac roses.

Rare Lavender Roses

Lilac roses have always been some of the most sought after blooms due to their stunning and unique coloring. Lilac roses began as hybrids from the Old Garden varieties found in many European gardens. To rose enthusiasts, lilac roses have an almost magical quality to them and they have been carefully cultivated by many different growers in several of the largest rose collections throughout the world.

Lilac roses, also called lavender roses, when given as a gift has the meaning of “love at first sight” and implies that the sender was enchanted and instantly charmed by the person receiving these eye-catching blooms.

Magical Lilac Roses

Purple roses due to their visual beauty have been seen as a ”fantasy flower” not unlike the fabled “blue rose”. Lilac roses express feelings of delight, infatuation or being overcome by adoration. The color purple has long been associated with royalty, nobility or reverence. Giving someone special lavender roses says to them, “You are my Queen” or “You are the King”. And quite recently lilac roses have also had a connotation of an alternative lifestyle. Purple roses have been part of bridal bouquets for several celebrity alternative marriages.

Purple Roses Represents the Impossible.

Lavender roses or lilac roses share some of the same meanings as the famous blue rose. There is no naturally occurring blue rose, since roses don’t have the correct DNA to create blue pigment. So a natural blue rose was impossible. Blue roses in the past were actually white roses that have been especially modified to absorb blue dye. And so lilac roses until recently also represented the unattainable, the impossible or the unachievable.

But a Japanese liquor company has actually created a genetically enhanced blue rose from a lilac rose hybrid and a common blue pansy. While not actually blue in color, (In reality it looks very much like a slightly darker lilac rose), this DNA wonder bloom is considered to be the first true, blue rose.

Does this mean that lilac roses have dropped from symbolizing the impossible to just a mere fantasy? Not really because by giving lilac roses to someone special you are telling them that you think of them as unique and out of ordinary.
